You Become Like The People You Surround Yourself With

business group of successful business peopleDaily Quote: “Successful people are successful because they form the habits of doing those things that failures don’t like to do.” Albert Gray

When you set yourself new goals and determine what kind of life you would like to lead, do you ever consider that the people you surround yourself with could help you achieve this or hinder you? What effect do the people in your life have on your successes?

We tend to neglect this aspect of our goal setting. We look at ourselves and only judge what we are achieving in isolation to the environment we live in. Yet the people that surround us can help or hinder us vastly in reaching our goals.

Just One More Step To Achieve Your Goals

2491908933_2eacee990eDaily Quote: “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” Jimmy Dean

When you have committed yourself to a huge task and you cannot get out of it you often use a method to help yourself through this ordeal. And that is breaking your progress down into tiny achievable steps and small victories .

An example of this is Terry Fox. Terry was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer treatment activist. He became famous for the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research, which Fox ran with one prosthetic leg.

7 Steps To Take Every Day

WalkingDaily Quote: “Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential” Winston Churchill

How can you reach your goals? Practice the rule of seven every day. In a nutshell what that means is that you determine seven steps that you should take every day to take you closer to your goal. If you do this, over a period of time you will reach your goal.

How does this work? Every evening before you shut down your work for the day sit down and decide on seven things you need to do the next day that will seriously improve your chances of reaching your target. Of course you could make this ten steps, or if you are pressed for time only five steps.

Circumventing Obstacles

www.selfalot.comDaily Quote: “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal.” Hannah Moore

There is no such thing as a smooth ride. In all your endeavours there will be obstacles. Sometimes, if you are lucky, these will be small ones that you barely notice. Other times these hurdles may be so large that you think there is no way around them.

How do you get around these obstacles? Your first step towards jumping those hurdles is to check your attitude. Having a positive attitude is half the battle won. If you groan at the thought of these hurdles they will become twice as difficult to navigate around.

Keep Putting The Pressure On

www.selfalot.comDaily Quote: “Persistence is the twin sister of excellence. One is a matter of quality; the other, a matter of time.”

Persistence is most probably the most important quality that you will need if you want to be a high achiever. But even if you just want to achieve your goals for a happier life then never giving up on your dreams is the key.

This is the one area where we mostly fail. We give up far too easily. One or two small hiccups in our plans and we start wondering why we ever considered this onerous task as a goal. What were we thinking?

Apologise Gracefully For Your Errors

r206006_784709

Daily Quote: “If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.” Albert Einstein

It’s not enough to just admit to having made an error. Although this in itself is a great step forward in anybody’s journey. Just finding the courage to admit to having made a mistake is already wonderful progress in ones personal development.

But over and above the honesty towards oneself of admitting to a failure, an important step to closure on the topic is to apologise to the people you might have hurt or injured in the ‘failure experience’.

What To Do With Feedback

2066314126_233482b861Daily Quote: “Champions know there are no shortcuts to the top. They climb the mountain one step at a time. They have no use for helicopters!”
Judi Adler

The first point to remember about the feedback you are getting is that the person offering it is taking a risk. By telling somebody something about them, especially if it could be considered negative, you stand the risk of being rejected yourself.

Providing feedback is a risky business. Think of the concept of shooting the messenger. There’s some truth to that saying. You could be considered a bad person, or making a fool of yourself, by telling somebody that they are on the wrong path.

Use Feedback To Help You On Your Way To Success

feedbackDaily Quote: “Champions know that success is inevitable; that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. They know that the best way to forecast the future is to create it.” Michael J. Gelb

In the business environment market research is used to determine what products might be useful for the target market and which ones could be profitable and popular. In our lives we seldom do any market research. We decide on a goal and just go for it.

Use feedback like market research. There are several ways of going about it. You can ask around for feedback on an idea you have and build your goal around the answers you receive. For instance you might want to start a new hobby and think that playing a musical instrument could be fun.

Do You Always Listen To Feedback

www.selfalot.comDaily Quote: “When others come to you with an unprompted idea or suggestion, stop what you are doing and listen with your eyes, ears, and heart.” Mitch Thrower

How often have you ignored feedback? And what were the consequences of that? There are easy examples such as getting lost, or catching the wrong bus. There are some really serious ones where you damaged your health because you followed the wrong diets or had an accident because you were talking on your mobile while driving.

Probably the most obvious situation is when you ignore the instructions to find your way to where you want to go to. You have checked the map but it didn’t look right. So you asked somebody and they told you the same way. It still didn’t feel right, so you ignored all advice and followed your instinct. Many hours of driving in the wrong direction later you finally decide to turn back.

How Not To Respond To Feedback

www.selfalot.comDaily Quote: “Once you embrace unpleasant news, not as a negative but as evidence of a need for change, you aren’t defeated by it. You’re learning from it.” Bill Gates

Have you ever played a game as a child where you had to find something and all the other participants would call out whether you were hot or cold? If you were hot then you were getting closer and with cold you were searching further away from what you wanted to find. This was particularly great fun over Easter when looking for the last chocolate bunnies.
