Buy Into A Life Of Never Ending Improvement

bullseyeDaily Quote: “Self-improvement is the name of the game, and your primary objective is to strengthen yourself, not to destroy an opponent” Maxwell Maltz

It has often been said that standing still actually means moving backwards. This principle applies to everything in life. It’s our personal lives, our careers, our investments our life in general. If you don’t seek improvement in every area of your life you will get left behind.

This is very evident in the lives of sporting people. Looking at athletics or swimming for instance, the records constantly tumble. In gymnastics and diving the skills levels are permanently pushed higher.

Commit To Never-Ending Improvement

Continuous-improvementDaily Quote: “There is only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that’s your own self.” Aldous Huxley

Achievers, whether in the financial or sporting fields and in fact in any part of life, have one thing in common and that is a constant commitment to improving. If you want to be more successful you have to constantly ask what can you do better.

It is particularly important in the mind-numbing pace of change that the world is going through. And this frantic change is not going to slow down. In fact it will probably speed up. What your forefathers lived through, the slow development of the motor car, the telephone, the internet will seem slow in years to come.

What To Do After You Have Made A Mistake

mistakesDaily Quote: “Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit.” Conrad Hilton

You’ve made a mistake, you’ve admitted to it and you have apologised for your error to anybody you have hurt. And you have tried to make good the damage you might have caused. What is the next step for you to take in your self-development journey?

It of course depends on how big the mistake was. If you mismanaged your finances and ended up losing a prosperous business which means having to close it down you would have larger consequences to deal with.

Apologise Gracefully For Your Errors

r206006_784709

Daily Quote: “If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.” Albert Einstein

It’s not enough to just admit to having made an error. Although this in itself is a great step forward in anybody’s journey. Just finding the courage to admit to having made a mistake is already wonderful progress in ones personal development.

But over and above the honesty towards oneself of admitting to a failure, an important step to closure on the topic is to apologise to the people you might have hurt or injured in the ‘failure experience’.

Admit To Your Failures

overcomingadversity3Daily Quote: “Errors are inevitable. The mark of character is not refusing to recognize them, but acknowledging them and taking responsibility.” Andrew Sullivan

Open yourself up to an understanding about failure. The only way to put any failure behind you is to fully admit that you messed up, made a mistake, had a negative outcome and many more ways of stating the same.

You could have overspent on your credit card and are now finding yourself in huge debt. Admit to this by accepting that you overspent. Stop lying to yourself that you needed all those clothes, holidays, luxuries, toys for the kids and more spending examples.

What To Do With Feedback

2066314126_233482b861Daily Quote: “Champions know there are no shortcuts to the top. They climb the mountain one step at a time. They have no use for helicopters!”
Judi Adler

The first point to remember about the feedback you are getting is that the person offering it is taking a risk. By telling somebody something about them, especially if it could be considered negative, you stand the risk of being rejected yourself.

Providing feedback is a risky business. Think of the concept of shooting the messenger. There’s some truth to that saying. You could be considered a bad person, or making a fool of yourself, by telling somebody that they are on the wrong path.

Use Feedback To Help You On Your Way To Success

feedbackDaily Quote: “Champions know that success is inevitable; that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. They know that the best way to forecast the future is to create it.” Michael J. Gelb

In the business environment market research is used to determine what products might be useful for the target market and which ones could be profitable and popular. In our lives we seldom do any market research. We decide on a goal and just go for it.

Use feedback like market research. There are several ways of going about it. You can ask around for feedback on an idea you have and build your goal around the answers you receive. For instance you might want to start a new hobby and think that playing a musical instrument could be fun.

Be Prepared To Ask For Feedback

3398704844_d57075a236Daily Quote: “It’s a rare person who wants to hear what he doesn’t want to hear.” Dick Cavett

Many of us are very unwilling to ask for feedback. This is because we are scared of what we will hear. We would rather keep our head buried in the sand and not hear any bad news or negative feedback.

As much as this is understandable it doesn’t help not knowing the truth. If you are offending your partner by teasing them mercilessly in public and laughing at them, wouldn’t it be better to know that this is hurting them?

Ask For Feedback And Improve Your Performance

www.selfalot.comDaily Quote: The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism.” Norman Vincent Peale

Many times in our lives we stand at a cross roads and we don’t know what to do. What would help us would be to find a person or coach and get some feedback to really maximise our life experiences. But we don’t ask or employ a coach. We think we can do this ourselves.

There are many times when we are faced with particularly difficult decisions and do not know what to do next that we could really do with listening to some good advice. All we need is to find somebody competent to ask.

Do You Always Listen To Feedback

www.selfalot.comDaily Quote: “When others come to you with an unprompted idea or suggestion, stop what you are doing and listen with your eyes, ears, and heart.” Mitch Thrower

How often have you ignored feedback? And what were the consequences of that? There are easy examples such as getting lost, or catching the wrong bus. There are some really serious ones where you damaged your health because you followed the wrong diets or had an accident because you were talking on your mobile while driving.

Probably the most obvious situation is when you ignore the instructions to find your way to where you want to go to. You have checked the map but it didn’t look right. So you asked somebody and they told you the same way. It still didn’t feel right, so you ignored all advice and followed your instinct. Many hours of driving in the wrong direction later you finally decide to turn back.
