writing-exercise-comfort-zoneEvery top sports person takes immeasurable small risks all the time. In fact the more successful they are the more they take risks. Think of the baseball player who steals second base. He can’t do that without leaving first base.

All great achievement has come from great risk, whether on a personal or global scale. When you step outside your comfort zone to reach your achievement life becomes more rewarding.

So where are you with respect to your goals? Are you securely anchored to first base? Or have you stolen second base yet?

Most people drive through live in first gear. It’s like when you first started driving a car. Even the lowest speed felt like driving far too fast. It was only once your eyes could adjust to the scenery and you got used to speed did you put your foot down ever so slowly.

But you perservered with your driving lessons because you were determined to achieve the goal of your license. The dream of the independence you would achieve by being able to drive a car was far ahead of the fear of learning to drive in the first instance.

What will enable you to step outside your comfort zone? A burning desire will help you overcome your fears. But add something else to that. Change gears. Go quicker. Get out of your comfort zone.

Your comfort zone is the place where your mind talk tells you that you can cope. That you are ok and can handle life and the curve balls it throws you. Outside your comfort zone you have a question in your mind whether you can actually handle life.

As an example, think of a job you are doing or have done in the past which was totally boring and tedious. Yet you kept on doing it because you felt confident that you could deliver. It took quite a lot of energy to leave that job because it had become your comfort zone.

Most people who have been pushed out of that zone because they lost their job or were offered another one that was just so much better they had to take it are amazed after a short while that they stuck it out for so long.

What keeps you in that comfort zone? It is your self-talk that is constantly reminding you that you are lucky to have this boring job. Other people are starving out there so why are you worried about a boring job?

Besides that you are sure not to be able to cope with any other job. After all this is as far as you can go. You don’t have a college education, you are too old already to change jobs, you don’t have the aptitude for any other job and you certainly would fail at anything else.

In reality none of these limiting beliefs that you have are of any significance whether you can manage another job or not. There are people as old as eighty who are working in good jobs. As an example a 67 year old has just been appointed to head up the sinking ship called GM in June 2009. He has never worked in the motor industry before. Ever.

He has no limiting beliefs. He just said, how hard can it be!

Listen to your limiting beliefs and work to overcome them. If you have set yourself some big goals, you will need to step out of your comfort zone. You won’t stand any chance of attaining them otherwise.

I hope it gives you strength to step outside your comfort zone. After all, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The Comfort Zone.
By: Unknown

I used to have a comfort zone where I knew I wouldn’t fail.
The same four walls and busy work were really more like jail.
I longed so much to do the things I’d never done before,
But stayed inside my comfort zone and paced the same old floor.

I said it didn’t matter that I wasn’t doing much.
I said I didn’t care for things like commission checks and such.
I claimed to be so busy with things inside my zone,
But deep inside I longed for something special of my own.

I couldn’t let my life go by just watching others win.
I held my breath; I stepped outside and let the change begin.
I took a step and with new strength I’d never felt before,
I kissed my comfort zone goodbye and closed and locked the door.

If you’re in a comfort zone, afraid to venture out,
Remember that all winners were at one time filled with doubt.
A step or two and words of praise can make your dreams come true.
Reach for your future with a smile;
Success is there for you!
