Daily Quote: “You cannot discover new oceans until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
When you are afraid to take outright action because your goal seems so unachievable it might be an idea just to stick your toe into the water. First the toe, then perhaps the whole foot, maybe add your other foot, then to your knees and so on until you are paddling around.
Just by taking that first tiny, hesitant step you create a small amount of momentum that could carry you forward. You just started, you leant into it. You made a first tiny move. You find out what it feels like and you never know you might end up finding it not so difficult.
If you have set your goal to change careers. You know that you are not really the right person for this hard sales job. You would much prefer to be outside, gardening, growing plants or vegetables. But how do you get from selling insurance to growing tomatoes?
Lean into it. Stick your toe in. Sign up for a week-ends only veggie patch gardening course. Learn how to grow tomatoes and runner beans and carrots. Or do that course on flower and tree identification at evening college. Enjoyed that? What about a Sunday job at the local nursery? You can combine your sales skills with your love of plants.
Did that work out for you? What about checking to see if there’s a full time job there? Then see who supplies the plants to the nursery and find out if they might need a sales person. In the end that little venture, that tiny move to test the water can be the start of a momentum that suddenly carries you towards your goal.
Of course sticking your toe into the water does mean that you haven’t quite worked out the whole path you want to take. You haven’t committed to getting fully wet, to swim, to fish or whatever is making you stick your toe in the water.
That means you can’t see the full way forward. That can be very scary. Not knowing how you will end up becoming a gardener and just going with the flow can be very unsettling. Most people, especially when they get a little older tend to want to know exactly what their life’s path will look like.
Taking a chance on finding your way into working as a gardener without knowing how you will get there can be frightening and may put off many people so they don’t even try any course of action.
Having the faith that somehow you will get to that goal takes a lot of courage. Not knowing where the path will take you can put off many people who have set themselves a substantial goal. In fact it could mean that they never feel ready to take that first step as they can’t even see the next step in front of them.
What to do then? Just stick your toe in. Lean into it. Make a tiny move. It doesn’t take that much to take that tiny step. It hardly takes any time commitment and sometimes not even any money. Try it out. You might just like it.
