Daily Quote — “A race horse that can run a mile a few seconds faster is worth twice as much. That little extra proves to be of the greatest value.” John D. Hess
With great enthusiasm you have compiled your goals. You have even read some self-help books to guide you along the way. They are beautifully recorded and hanging in full view. You even have them written on a piece of paper that you carry around with you.
What happens next? An avalanche of success stopping images and thoughts assail you. If you are not aware of what will happen you could end up not even starting on your quest to achieve your goals.
One of the first things that will happen once the enthusiasm and energy of your goal writing experience has dissipated is you will think that the cold dawn of reality has struck you. This is the moment where your thoughts turn to the fact that you can’t actually do what you have set yourself.
Of course you can’t lose that fifty pounds of weight. You have tried this every few months for the last ten years. After a few weeks of starvation you got sick and tired of feeling lousy and went back to your old ways.
Earning that kind of money? Never. You couldn’t work hard enough to ever make a million in the dead end job you are in. Who would employ you at such a salary, with the miserable skills you have? Nobody. Might as well throw that small sized outfit in the bottom of the cupboard and shred that bank statement showing that million as your balance. Not going to happen.
Your ever so logical brain will tear down all that enthusiasm that you had when you set those goals. Your mind talk will point out your past failures, your hopeless situation, the stupidity of even considering these goals and in general make sure that you give up on all ideas of reaching your recently established targets.
If that doesn’t totally shred your enthusiasm then the next one to trip you up is straight forward fear. Your fears will start to make you think that you don’t even want to go to the weight program meeting because people will laugh at you, the scale will break, the group leader will mock you, the rest of the people will look at you with pity.
Your fears will advise you that you shouldn’t think of trying out for a better paying job because you will be rejected. You could even lose the badly paying job you are in right now, so where would that leave you when you needed to pay the rent. And so the mind talk dances its own merry little jig.
Your final death knell to reaching your goals will be the roadblocks that the world puts in your way. Some of these can be substantial some minor. But in your mind they could all be of Mt Everest proportion.
If you wanted to lose weight you find that there is no support group near you. You have no access to help, there is no doctor or nutritionist available to assist with a regular and healthy diet. In fact you can’t leave the house because of lack of transport and you have no computer available to source information off the Internet.
In terms of your better paying job, or business you wish to start there are many ways the world can put a roadblock in the way of your progress. Your evening college could shut down your course for any number of reasons and you would not be able to get that extra qualification you need.
What about the company you are working for and where you have a good chance of advancement suddenly closing its doors because of the economic downturn? It could be that your department only gets shut down and you have no job, never mind even advancing.
If you expect these set-backs you are able to handle them better and overcome them. Expect to have your mind-talk tell you about the impossibilities. Anticipate that you will have fears to overcome and understand that the world will put some obstacles in your way. Be warned and be aware!

I wonder how your daily quote fits within the schema of the old adage about the tortoise in the hare; however, many of your points here are very good. No more self limiting thoughts for me…
